The idea of a drop rail crib sounds good in theory, but in practice it is just not a very good idea at all. For one thing, it is just really not all that difficult to reach down and get your baby out of the crib. I suppose if the parents are not very tall it may make a slight difference, however almost all cribs come with a mattress adjustment where you can move the entire mattress platform up or down to raise the height at which your baby sleeps. This is not only safer for your baby, it is also better on your back. Having a drop down side rail on your crib is a serious hazard to your baby and in some cases has caused infant death! If you think about it for even a moment you will understand how easily this can happen. Most drop down rail crib systems utilize some form of plastic sliding mechanism and usually a simple plastic tab that locks the rail into its uppermost raised position. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that plastic is flexible and not very sturdy.
Imagine if your small child starts squirming around in his or her crib in the middle of the night and ends up putting their arm through the side rail and the side rail (which is held up by that little plastic tab) slides down and traps your baby's arm between the mattress and the top of the rail. This may not sound like a death sentence, however imagine now that your baby's face is buried into the mattress, a stuffed animal or a pillow when this happens and the outcome starts becoming a little more gruesome. Very small children are simply not capable of lifting the rail, or pulling themselves loose from their trapped position. In that struggle to get loose they would become tired and eventually fall asleep with their face buried into the pillow or stuffed animal and suffocate.
Convertible Crib Rail
It is a terrible thing to even think about, and it is very hard to write about as well. I do so however, to try and make parents understand the real danger in drop rail cribs and hopefully convince them to purchase a crib without a drop rail. There are many options available on the market that do not even offer a drop rail system because the manufacturer understands the dangers. Believe it or not these cribs do cost a little bit more, but they are usually built to last for ages and would make a great family heirloom to pass on for generations to come. The reason they cost a little more, and the reason they last so long is because they are real furniture with no plastic or other movable parts.
As a parent myself, I can tell you that most parents never actually use the drop rail system anyway, so there is really no point in taking the risk on a feature that you are unlikely to benefit from at all.
