Child Development - 22 Months

New parents must face many new challenges associated with raising their little one. As the child grows older, parents can become frustrated. For this reason, it is important to understand how the mind of a child works at different stages.

By the age of 22 months, the growing toddler is becoming more and more interested in asserting his or her independence. This is a good thing, especially as the child begins to set individual goals to achieve. These goals might include putting the pieces of a puzzle together or riding a tricycle down the street. Parents should encourage their child to set and reach such goals, as this is an important step in becoming an independent individual.

When the toddler does not reach his or her goals-or when the child does not get his or her way-parents might be dealing with screaming, yelling, and other tantrums. This is also a normal part of development. What is most important is that parents remain calm and try to comfort their child, while explaining that he or she will not always get his or her way in life.

The age of 22 months might also be a good time to transition the child from a crib to a toddler bed, depending on his or her size. Many cribs are now convertible, meaning that one of the sides can be removed and then replaced with a toddler rail (usually sold separately). It is often best to move the child from a crib to a toddler bed before he or she learns how to climb out of the crib in order to avoid accidents or other unpleasantness.

There are many challenges to be tackled as the child approaches his or her second birthday, but parents who understand this transition will be better equipped to deal with these challenges.
